Which Setting Spray Is Right For You? Here’s What I Tell My Clients
Let’s talk setting sprays. Just like hairsprays, there are different types that do different jobs – and knowing which one to use (and when) can make a huge difference in how your makeup wears throughout the day.
Some setting sprays are designed to melt makeup into the skin, taking away that powdery, just-applied look and leaving you with a more natural, lived-in finish. These are great for softening edges, calming the overall feel of your makeup, and giving spa-like vibes. They’re lightweight and often refreshing, but don’t expect them to hold up through humidity or a long day without touch-ups.
A few of my favorite makeup-melting sprays:
If you need your makeup to truly last through heat, humidity, or a long event, I recommend a strong-hold spray. Two of the best in this category:
ONE/SIZE On ‘Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray – intense hold with a super matte finish.
L’Oréal Infallible 3 Second Setting Spray – locks makeup in place for 8 to 12 hours.
And if you’re after that sweet spot between feel-good finish and real performance, I also love these tried-and-true staples:
How and When to Use Setting Spray
There are no hard rules, but I usually recommend using a lightweight setting spray early in your routine – after foundation or powders – to melt everything together. You can layer a more intense, long-wear spray at the end if needed. If you’re going to be photographed or need your makeup to truly last, I love using sprays at multiple steps for the best finish and hold.
Remember, not all sprays are created equal. The feel, the scent, and the performance can vary – so don’t be afraid to test a few until you find your perfect match.
