What’s the Difference Between Everyday Makeup and Special Occasion Makeup?

As a makeup artist with more than a decade of experience under my makeup belt, I've had the pleasure of crafting countless looks for various occasions, from weddings to glamorous events. One thing I've learned along the way (in my early years as an artist) is that the makeup we wear on a typical day often differs significantly from what we wear on special occasions such as birthdays, dinners, weddings, photoshoots, and other events.

So, whether you're preparing for your big day or simply seeking to elevate your look for an vent, let’s chat about the four key differences, in my opinion, between everyday makeup and special occasion makeup.

1. Longevity = additional products

Everyday makeup is typically a quicker and easier makeup look, but for special occasions such as your wedding day or a photoshoot, your makeup needs staying power. Think: multiple layers of eyeliner (shadow liner, pencil, gel), multiple setting and finishing powders, setting sprays - products that will really help your look last all day and night. I personally like to do LIGHT layers so that nothing looks or feels heavy on your skin, but the longevity still exists.

2. More = more

As mentioned above, for special occasions, your makeup needs to not only last longer than your usual look when you’re running errands or sitting at a computer desk, but it should look special and it needs to show up in photos! Therefore, makeup artists will use a bit more makeup to really bring out your features and make you feel fab, such as cream contour plus powder bronzer, cream blush plus powder blush, etc.

3 . Attention to detail

You don’t just want to look good on your special days, you want to look flawless (right?!). Everyday makeup is something you can probably do in your sleep…special occasion makeup requires extra attention to detail, such as strategic placement and blending of completion products, extra time spent on the eyes and lips, and more.

4. A little bit of drama goes a long way

I don’t know about you, but I personally don’t wear false lashes for my everyday makeup look (although if you do, I think that’s freakin’ fabulous). Special occasion makeup calls for a little bit of drama, darling…if that’s what you want!
