If You've Been Doing Your Makeup the Same Way for 15 Years, This One's for You
Let me ask you something. When's the last time you actually updated your makeup routine?
Not swapped out a lipstick shade or tried a new mascara - I mean really looked at the way you apply your makeup and thought, is this still serving me? Because if the answer is "I've been doing it the same way since [insert year that shall not be named]," then this post is exactly for you.
I recently put together a full modern makeup routine on Instagram, and the response was everything. So I'm breaking it all down here - every product, every step, and more importantly, the why behind it. Because updating your routine isn't about chasing trends. It's about learning techniques and finding products that actually work with your skin and your life right now.
Let's get into it.
Face
Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
This is a forever staple in my kit and honestly one of the most universally flattering foundations I've ever worked with. The coverage is buildable, the finish is that perfect "your skin but better" glow - not matte, not overdone. If you've been using a heavy, full-coverage foundation for years, switching to something like this is one of the fastest ways to modernize your look.
Cream bronzer has completely changed the game for natural-looking warmth. The old way - heavy powder bronzer buffed all over - can look muddy and dated. A cream bronzer like this one melts into the skin and gives you that sun-kissed look that actually looks like sun, not product. This is one of my favorite swaps to recommend.
Concealer has come such a long way. If you've been using a thick, cakey formula under your eyes for years, this is your sign to try something lighter and more skin-like. This one blends beautifully and doesn't settle into fine lines - which is a game changer for anyone who's ever looked in the mirror at noon and wondered what happened.
Patrick Ta Cream & Powder Blush
Blush placement and formula have evolved so much. We've moved away from the heavily contoured, stripe-of-blush-on-the-cheekbone look and into something softer and more flushed. This duo gives you a cream base with a powder on top for staying power - and the result is a natural flush that looks like it came from within. Trust me, blush is having a major moment and you want in.
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder
Setting powder used to be a step people either skipped or went way too heavy on. This one is finely milled enough that it sets everything without looking powdery - it just smooths and blurs. A little goes a long way, and it photographs beautifully.
After the cream bronzer, I go in with this powder bronzer to add depth and dimension. Layering a cream and a powder bronzer is a technique I use on clients constantly - it gives a richness and longevity that one product alone just can't match.
Eyes
Makeup by Mario Cream Eyeshadow in Bisque
A cream eyeshadow as a base is something so many people skip, and it's one of the biggest differences between a look that lasts all day and one that creases by lunch. Bisque is the perfect neutral - it works as a standalone wash of color or as a base to make your powder shadows pop and stay put.
Liner can date a look faster than almost anything else. If you're still doing a harsh, thick line across your entire lid - we need to talk. A more modern approach is tightlining or a softer smudged line that defines without overpowering. This eyeliner makes that so easy to do.
Never skipping mascara. Ever. But the way we apply it has evolved - less is more with coats, and lengthening and separating is the move over clumpy volume. This mascara does both beautifully without the spider lash situation we're all trying to avoid.
Brows might be the single biggest glow-up you can give your routine. The super-drawn, block brow is out. Natural, fluffy, and defined is in. This pencil is great for adding hair-like strokes and filling in gaps without making it look like you drew your brows on with a marker.
Lips
Liner is back - and done right, it makes your lip color last so much longer and look more polished. The key is matching it to your lipstick or going one shade deeper, and blending it in rather than leaving a harsh outlined edge. That's the move.
A beautiful lipstick moment never goes out of style - it's all about the shade and finish. This one has that perfect balance of color and comfort, and it photographs like a dream whether you're going somewhere special or just want to feel put together on a Tuesday.
Finishing with a lip gloss over your lipstick gives dimension and a modern glossy finish that's way more wearable than a traditional gloss. It also keeps your lips feeling amazing all day. This is the kind of small swap that makes a big difference in how current your overall look feels.
Here's the thing I want you to take away from all of this - updating your routine doesn't mean starting from scratch or spending a fortune all at once. Pick one or two swaps that resonate with you and start there. Maybe it's the cream bronzer. Maybe it's finally fixing your brows. Whatever it is, small changes add up to a look that feels like the most current, most confident version of you.
And if you want help figuring out where to start? That's literally what I'm here for. Makeup lessons are one of my favorite things I do - because watching someone see themselves differently is everything.
