5 Ways I Stay on Schedule as a Makeup Artist on Wedding Days

Because timing is everything when you’re getting a bride ready for photos and to walk down the aisle..

Let’s be real: wedding mornings can be hectic. With so many moving parts - hair, makeup, florals, dresses, photographers - it’s essential that I, as a makeup artist, keep things running smoothly. And over the years, I’ve developed a few non-negotiable habits that help me stay on time, every time.

Here are 5 ways I stay on schedule on wedding days (that go way beyond just setting an alarm):

1. An Old Fashioned Printed Schedule

While I love a digital calendar as much as the next person, I always bring a printed version of the schedule I confirmed with my bride. Flipping through my phone mid-glam just doesn’t feel professional, and having a tangible schedule helps me stay focused and efficient.

2. My Trusty Portable Clock

I get asked about this all the time - why not just wear an Apple Watch? Honestly…I just don’t like how it looks on my wrist during weddings . Instead, I bring a sleek little portable mini clock that sits on my makeup station. It’s discreet, stylish, and helps me keep track of time without distractions.

3. Individual Brush Sets per Client

This is a huge one. I prep individual brush sets (and sponges/powder puffs) for every client ahead of time. Not only is this the most sanitary option, it’s also the fastest way to stay organized while I work. No cleaning between faces. No second-guessing what’s clean. Just grab-and-go kits that streamline the whole process.

4. Built-In Buffer Time

No wedding morning ever goes exactly as planned - and that’s okay! I always add extra time into the schedule for things like set up, bridal makeup, and touch-ups. These built-in buffers mean that if we do run a little late (which can happen for a million reasons!), I’m not stressed - and more importantly, neither is the bride.

5. Coffee. Always.

This one’s self-explanatory. No schedule starts until I’ve had my morning coffee :)

Fellow Makeup Artists: What Are Your Wedding Day Time-Savers?

If you’re a fellow MUA, I’d love to know - do you do any of these things too? Is there a genius time-management trick I’m missing?!
