What’s In My Professional Makeup Kit?
Hi! If you are new here, welcome! If you don’t know me, I’m Caitlyn Tuzzolino – the owner of Makeup by Caitlyn Michelle. I started this little blog in either 2010 or 2011 while I was a junior in college. As part of one of my PR classes, we learned the VERY basics of blogging. It was all so foreign at that point in time! I remember my professional teaching us how to insert links and images. It’s so funny to look back on now.
A year or two later, I decided to actually start blogging (I use that term VERY loosely, haha). Then, I decided to begin pursuing my real dream: becoming a makeup artist. It was late 2012 when I made that decision, and I have not looked back ever since. In the past seven years, I have learned A LOT to say the very least. I learn something new every day, to be honest. And over those years and through trial and error, I have refined quite possibly the most important tool in my business: my makeup kit.
I’m not talking about the makeup I keep on my bathroom vanity to apply to myself. I’m talking an 80-pound suitcase chalked full of professional makeup, complete with an extra duffle bag of tools, professional lighting system, foldable director’s chair, and foldable table. These are things that I bring with me to each and every wedding that I do.
For the longest time, I’ve had aspiring makeup artists ask me, “what’s in your makeup kit? You should do a video!” So, here we are. But first, before you start watching this 40-minute beauty (yes, 40 full minutes – I’m sorry I tried to go fast), just know a couple of things:
- I built this kit over time. A couple of years ago, I made a blog post titled, “What’s In My $13,264 Makeup Kit?” My kit has grown tremendously since then, and therefore, even more dollars spent. My point is that I didn’t just wake up one morning in 2012 and drop $13,000. I built this over time, through trial and error. Anything that I purchased for my kit in those earlier years is no longer in it.
- My advice to you, if you are an aspiring makeup artist, is to start small. What I did was break my kit down into sections, and tackle one section at a time. I told myself that with one paycheck (from my fulltime job), I would purchase all shades of concealer. Next paycheck: foundation. And so on and so forth. You get the picture!
- Everyone has their own preferences. One of my very close friends is also a makeup artist (hi, Steph, if you are reading this!), and we do not have the exact same kit. Why? Just like we probably drink our coffee in different ways, that’s why! She might love a product that I don’t and vice versa, and that’s okay. This is just a fun (hopefully fun) video for you to watch to get some ideas. It doesn’t mean you need to run to Sephora with a mile-long shopping list of everything that I mentioned.
- Lastly, I look a hot MESS in this video (minus the hot part), but this is who I really am. On a daily basis, I’m not fully glammed up. I’m typically in yoga pants with a ponytail or bun and no (or minimal) makeup. I thought about re-recording this video when I looked more presentable and didn’t look as shiny (y’all – my nose is SO shiny in this, hahaha), but then I thought, who cares? Hopefully, you don’t!
Okay, so without any more typing (or reading for you), here is the video of what’s in my professional makeup kit. Enjoy!
