Beauty Sleep Checklist
I’ve always thought that sleep is the best beauty tool there is. It helps your body rebuild and clean its systems, giving you a natural glow and youthful appearance. There’s a reason it’s called “beauty sleep”, after all! I’ve put together a list of steps to take every night to ensure that you’re getting the sleep that your body deserves.
Use a Nighttime Skin Care Routine
Starting a quick bedtime beauty routine is an easy, but effective way to incorporate some self- care into your night. I recommend beginning by washing your face to clear your skin of makeup and dirt before starting any skin care products. Then, try a toner to protect, refresh, and strengthen your skin. Finish it out with a serum and moisturizer to hydrate your skin all night long and prevent long-term damage. Try to exfoliate two to three times a week, but don’t overdo it! Exfoliating can irritate your skin if done too frequently.
Turn Off LED Lights
Being on my phone before bed (ya know, mindlessly scrolling through Instagram looking at memes and watching makeup tutorials on YouTube when I should be sound asleep) is something I am guilty of and trying to get better at. The blue light from electronics can interrupt your sleep cycle
by slowing the production of melatonin, the hormone that helps you fall asleep. Plus, the extra screen time can create unnecessary stress at bedtime. It’s best to keep your electronics far
away so there’s less temptation, and you’re able to drift to dreamland more easily.
Take some time every night to de-stress and help clear your mind to achieve more restful sleep.
Journaling, reading, or meditating are all great ways to reflect on the day and collect your thoughts, then leave them behind. Check out some of my other self-care tips for more inspiration!
Set the Mood for Sleep
A good sleeping environment is key to easily fall asleep. There are a lot of different ways to set up a relaxing atmosphere as your drift off; a darkened room, sound machine, or comfy pajamas will all do the trick. Another route that I’ve recently fallen in love with is aromatherapy. I like to throw some lavender or tea tree essential oil in a diffuser to help me unwind once I crawl into bed.
Nothing’s worse than tossing and turning all night in a hot bedroom. Set yourself up for a restful
sleep by ensuring that you’ll stay cool from dusk to dawn. Drink a glass of water before bed and
use a foam mattress for breathability throughout the night. In the summer, if air conditioning isn’t available, create a cross breeze with two fans on either side of your bed.
Use an Eye Mask
Not only does an eye mask help you avoid distractions to settle into sleep faster, but it can also have other direct beauty benefits. Try a frozen eye mask to reduce puffiness and prevent wrinkles built up from rubbing your face against the pillow. If you’re congested, try heating the mask (if it allows!) to reduce swelling and speed up recovery to help you sleep through the night.
